Meet Diana Garcia
Westchester Country Day School
Level: High School
I teach: Spanish
Favorite Part of being an ACTFL Member:
I joined ACTFL when I was a graduate student at the Department of Romance Languages in UNC Chapel Hill. I felt that joining an organization that promotes and advocates for the study of world languages would allow me to find people who are passionate about learning languages as well as provide professional support for teachers like me.
Favorite Part of Career:
I have so many memorable moments. I think one of the most memorable ones was two years ago when I taught an amazing AP Spanish Language and Culture class. The students were so genuinely eager to learn and the class discussions on topics ranging from history to art, to literature and culture were so engaging. I felt connected to the learners and their ongoing sucess has been so rewarding.
One thing I Recently Learned:
One thing that I have learned in the past year that is important for me to remember is that I do not control everything. There are all kinds of neurodiverse students that can pose a challenge when it comes to teaching strategies, but the important thing is to recognize it and accept that things change and that we must be willing to adapt and learn as teachers.
Fun Fact:
I find it hard to keep a straight face when my students do or say something funny in the classroom. I also love learning Welsh.
